KARACHI: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial has said that the government intends to completely abolish the Super Tax.

He said its rate has already been reduced by 2 percentage points, with an aim at gradual elimination.

Speaking to industrialists during his visit to the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) he announced that an FBR office would be established at the KATI to facilitate the industrialists. The scope of the FBR help desk would also be extended from Karachi to Sukkur.

The FBR Chairman further stated that meetings would be held to resolve border trade-related issues faced by the leather industry. He also discussed the implementation of a model similar to the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) for the pharmaceutical industry to make the Track and Trace System more effective.

He said the FBR’s objective was to improve the tax system and facilitate the business community. He urged industrialists and the country’s business community to cooperate with the FBR in identifying and eliminating tax evasion so that the tax system could be made more transparent and effective.

KATI President Sheikh Umer Rehan expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for directing the FBR Chairman to visit Karachi every month to improve the economy and address the difficulties faced by industrialists. He said that if the federal cabinet and ministers also devoted time to Karachi, following the example of the FBR Chairman, it would help strengthen Pakistan’s economy.

He added that the effective implementation of the FBR’s progressive policies, faceless assessment system and digitalisation could significantly expand the tax net and increase revenue collection. These measures could also help the government achieve its export target of Rs100 billion at an earlier stage.

He urged the FBR to strictly adhere to the prescribed timelines for refund payments, strengthen the automated system for the disbursement of genuine and verified refunds, and ensure that legitimate claims were not withheld under the pretext of unnecessary audits or documentation requirements.

He also called for maximum automation of tax-related procedures to minimise unnecessary interaction between tax officials and business representatives, discretionary decision-making and opportunities for potential corruption.
