KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has accused the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP)-led Sindh government of being an “epitome of corruption, incompetence and mismanagement,” blaming its policies for the suffering of Karachiites and for depriving the city of basic amenities despite its 96 per cent contribution to the provincial budget.

JI Karachi chief Monem Zafar Khan made these remarks while addressing an inauguration ceremony for Khursheed Ahmed Street in Liaquatabad Town. “The PPP has turned Karachi into a graveyard of development projects,” he said.

Accompanied by JI Central District chief Kamran Siraj, Liaquatabad Town Chairman Faraz Haseeb and other party leaders, Monem Zafar inaugurated several development projects in Union Council 4, Ibn-i-Sina. These included a paver-block road from Imam Shaheed Park to Firdous Shopping Centre, new poles and streetlights, and Khursheed Ahmed Street. He received a warm welcome upon his arrival in Liaquatabad.

Monem Zafar called for the transfer of powers and resources to the grassroots level, saying JI would continue to contribute to the city’s development and prosperity. He said JI had undertaken road construction and street improvement projects while ensuring transparency in the use of public funds.

He attributed the development work in Liaquatabad to the support the party had received from residents. He said improvements in town-run government schools had led to an increase in admissions, while a roadside urban forest initiative had introduced more trees and plants to the area.

Referring to electricity shortages, water scarcity and street crime he said JI continued to raise its voice on issues affecting citizens. He said residents in many parts of Karachi endured power outages lasting up to 18 hours, while large areas remained without adequate water supplies.

He also criticized the provincial government for retaining control over waste collection, saying garbage continued to accumulate across the city despite the billions of rupees allocated to the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board.
