ISLAMABAD: China’s Wuxi Shengbao Vehicle Manufacturing Company has expressed keen interest in establishing joint ventures (JVs) to manufacture two-wheelers in Pakistan for domestic consumption and export to other countries.
The company’s General Manager, Yang Zong, stated this on Thursday during a visit to the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI). Leading a Chinese business delegation, Yang Zong held a detailed meeting with ICCI President Mohammad Zikria Akbar Zia and other ICCI members.
During the meeting, Yang Zong showcased the company’s OPAI brand of two-wheelers and answered questions from participants about its products and business prospects. He highlighted the potential for cooperation to develop local manufacturing capabilities, strengthen supply chains, provide technical training and enhance the skills of Pakistani workers.
Speaking on the occasion President ICCI Zia called for joint ventures between Pakistani businesses and China’s Wuxi Shengbao Vehicle Manufacturing Company to promote electric motorcycle manufacturing, localise two-wheeler production and transfer modern technology to Pakistan, creating new opportunities for investment, employment and exports.
The ICCI President said Pakistan offered significant potential for electric two-wheelers, including electric motorcycles, scooters and bicycles. He encouraged the Chinese company to collaborate with Pakistani entrepreneurs in motorcycle assembly and manufacturing, technology transfer, research and development, and the gradual localisation of components. The delegation also included Cheng Zong, Qing Zong and Muhammad Arif.
Zia emphasised that Pakistan-China economic cooperation should move beyond the import and sale of finished products towards sustainable industrial partnerships. He said local manufacturing of electric motorcycles and other two-wheelers could reduce dependence on imported finished vehicles, strengthen domestic supply chains, develop technical expertise and create skilled employment for Pakistani youth.
He added that collaboration could also help establish Pakistan as a potential manufacturing base for regional and international markets. He assured the delegation that ICCI was ready to facilitate engagement with Pakistani manufacturers, investors and relevant government departments to identify suitable partners, explore manufacturing opportunities and address practical challenges to investment.
He also offered the company an opportunity to showcase its electric mobility products at the Chamber’s upcoming expo and at its display centre to increase market visibility, connect with potential business partners and explore commercial opportunities in Pakistan. He said the objective should be to translate the longstanding Pakistan-China friendship into tangible economic outcomes through motorcycle manufacturing, technology partnerships, industrial investment and export-oriented production.
ICCI Senior Vice President Mohammad Ashfaq Chatha highlighted the importance of business-to-business engagement and industrial collaboration for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
