ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced plans to convene a national sports conference to formulate a strategy for reviving Pakistan’s sporting glory and strengthening its presence in international competitions.

Addressing a ceremony held here on Saturday in honour of Pakistani athletes who won medals at the Asian Games, the prime minister said sports officials, former players and current athletes would participate in the conference to discuss measures for promoting sports in the country.

Congratulating the medal winners, Shehbaz Sharif said their achievements had brought pride and honour to Pakistan, while stressing that significant efforts were still needed to improve the country’s sporting performance.

Recalling Pakistan’s past successes in hockey, cricket and squash, he underscored the need to revive the country’s sporting legacy and encourage greater participation in diverse disciplines.

He noted the growing interest among young people in e-sports and football, calling for coordinated efforts to develop talent, improve training facilities and provide athletes with the resources needed to compete at the international level.

The prime minister stressed that talented athletes should receive equal opportunities for training and development without discrimination, saying that nurturing young talent was essential to restoring Pakistan’s position in international sports.

Earlier, the prime minister distributed prizes among the medal-winning athletes in recognition of their achievements.
