ISLAMABAD: Police have arrested a suspect accused of defrauding Laiba Aijaz, 20, a student at the International Islamic University (IIU), who allegedly committed suicide.
Police sources said Muhammad Nauman had been arrested. Following the incident, the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Anti-Human Trafficking Circle (AHTC) registered a case against Nauman and another suspect, Fatima Sarwar.
According to the first information report (FIR), an inquiry revealed that the accused, Muhammad Nauman and Fatima Sarwar, allegedly acted in connivance to extort Rs9.3 million from Laiba Aijaz on the pretext of arranging a US visa and securing a scholarship for her.
The FIR states that Rs2.9 million was transferred to Nauman through banking transactions from Laiba’s bank account, while the remaining amount was paid in cash at her father’s shop.
The accused allegedly provided fake scholarship award letters, university admission offer letters and fee payment receipts. After receiving the money, they allegedly defrauded Laiba, causing her substantial financial loss and severe mental distress. She subsequently died, according to the FIR.
Following approval from the competent authority, a case was registered against Nauman and Sarwar under Sections 419, 420 and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), read with Sections 18 and 22 of the Emigration Ordinance, 1979.
The FIR adds that the role of any other persons found to be involved will be determined during further investigation.
