Desalination plant in Karachi: Delegation of Chinese investors meets Nasir
KARACHI: Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah chaired an important meeting with a delegation of Chinese investors, during which detailed discussions were held on investment opportunities in various sectors in Karachi and Sindh, particularly modern firefighting systems and machinery, water-related projects and the establishment of a desalination plant in Karachi.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Investment Qasim Naveed Qamar, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Local Government Secretary Wasim Shamshad, CEO Water Corporation and other relevant officers attended the meeting.
During the meeting, the Chinese investors expressed keen interest in investing in various sectors and discussed opportunities for cooperation in modern technology, machinery and urban infrastructure development projects. Detailed discussions were also held on the provision of modern firefighting equipment and machinery and the development of an advanced system to deal with emergency situations.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Nasir Hussain Shah said that modern and effective firefighting systems were essential for protecting the lives and property of citizens. He said the Sindh government wanted to equip Rescue 1122 and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation with modern firefighting systems, equipment and machinery to ensure an immediate and effective response during emergencies. He said modern firefighting facilities would help reduce casualties as well as protect valuable property and urban infrastructure during fire incidents.
The CEO of the Water Corporation briefed the meeting about the requirements of the corporation, the existing water supply system and various projects aimed at improving water availability in Karachi.
Nasir said special attention was being given to new and sustainable water projects keeping in view the growing population and increasing water requirements of Karachi. He said modern technology and cooperation with the private sector were being encouraged to find long-term solutions to urban challenges.
The minister further said that Chinese investors had also expressed interest in investing in a desalination plant in Karachi, which could prove to be an important development in meeting the city’s growing water requirements. He said desalination projects could help address water shortages in Karachi by converting seawater into usable water and could strengthen the city’s water supply system in the future.
The meeting also discussed creating conducive environment for foreign investors, technology transfer, development of urban infrastructure and opportunities for cooperation in various projects.
Nasir Hussain Shah said the Sindh government was committed to providing all possible facilities and cooperation to foreign investors and would encourage foreign investment in projects aimed at improving public services, while steps would continue to modernise Karachi’s urban infrastructure by benefiting from advanced technology and international experience.
