ISLAMABAD: The government on Saturday extended the deployment of Rangers in Islamabad and parts of Punjab until October 15 to assist the police in maintaining law and order amid the expected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) ‘long march’.
On September 24, the government approved the deployment of Rangers in the federal capital, as well as, in various districts of Punjab, following requests from the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration and the Punjab government for deployment in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali.
The Ministry of Interior had earlier approved the deployment of Rangers in the federal capital and different districts of Punjab.
According to the notification, pursuant to requests made by the Chief Commissioner, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration, and the government of Punjab, the federal government was pleased to authorise the deployment of a sufficient strength of troops of Pakistan Rangers (Punjab) in the ICT and different districts of Punjab province.
The deployment of Rangers was made under Sections 7 (b) and 10 of the Pakistan Rangers Ordinance, 1959, and Sections 4 and 5 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, to discharge such functions as specified under the Ordinance and the Act, as authorised by the Chief Commissioner, Islamabad, and the provincial government.
It said the deployed troops might respond appropriately in self-defence to any threats or violent activities encountered in the course of their duties, in accordance with the rules and regulations in vogue.
