PD sets deadline for DISCOs to install AMI meters on 90% of govt connections

The Power Division (PD) on Wednesday set September 30, 2026 deadline for Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to upgrade 90% of all federal and provincial government electricity connections with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters.
The development came during a meeting held under the chairmanship of Secretary, Power Division, Dr Fakhar -e-Alam Irfan, read a statement.
The meeting reviewed progress on the installation of AMI meters by DISCOs on all provincial and federal government-owned connections, it added.
The meeting was informed that all DISCOs across the country have commenced replacement of existing meters on government premises, in compliance with the prime minister’s directives.

The primary objective of this initiative is to ensure billing transparency and to resolve longstanding reconciliation issues regarding government payables.
Moreover, Irfan directed all DISCO CEOs to take all necessary measures to achieve 100% replacement of government electricity meters with AMI within the stipulated timeline.
AMI involves the installation of smart meters that facilitate two-way communication between the utility and the consumer.
