LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday directed prov-incial lawmakers to maintain close contact with the public and said she wanted maximum progress on public projects within the shortest possible time.

She was speaking during a meeting with members of the Punjab Assembly from Okara, which was also attended by Provincial Minister Ashiq Hussain Shah, Javed Alauddin Sajid, Chaudhry Iftikhar Hussain Chhachhar, Noorul Amin Wattoo, Ali Abbas, Mian Yawar Zaman, Mian Muhammad Munir and Ghulam Raza.

The meeting discussed the political situation, development projects and issues confronting the lawmakers’ constituencies. The legislators apprised the chief minister of public grievances, while Maryam assured them of steps for their resolution.

The lawmakers congratulated the chief minister on establishing an integrated Safe City network across all 41 districts and two tehsils of Punjab. They also thanked her for the construction and rehabilitation of the GT Road-Bypass in Okara and appreciated the launch of electro-bus services in the city.

The chief minister urged the legislators to remain in close contact with the people and said the provincial government wanted to complete as many public welfare projects as possible within a short period. She said, for the first time, all cities and villages across the province were being cleaned under the “Suthra Punjab” programme.

“Receiving reports of an improvement in the quality of life of the people of Punjab brings me great satisfaction,” she said, adding that the distinction between Lahore and less-developed cities was being eliminated and electro-buses were being introduced in cities and villages across the province.

The lawmakers said electro-bus services were operating from the General Bus Stand to Akhtarabad, Karmalwala, Adda Kisan and Okara University. They appreciated free travel facilities for students, women and senior citizens.

They said the crime rate in Punjab was gradually declining due to the Safe City network and police efforts. Under Maryam’s leadership, they added, the province was moving towards greater development and prosperity.

The legislators said projects including electro-buses, the “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” housing scheme and the Kisan Card had gained popularity among the people.
