Jason Arday, the former Cambridge professor, has been found dead at a property in Battersea, south London, at the age of 41, said reports. Police have described the death as unexpected but not believed to be suspicious. His death came only days after he resigned from Cambridge amid allegations of plagiarism and wider questions about aspects of his academic record, the reports added. He had denied the allegations, while Cambridge had begun an investigation.
The circumstances make the story particularly tragic because Arday had become widely known for his extraordinary educational journey: according to earlier accounts, he did not speak until age 11 and did not learn to read and write until 18, before eventually becoming Cambridge’s youngest Black professor, said the reports. His family has said it is in shock and has attributed his death to what it described as a prolonged campaign of misinformation and harassment. That is the family’s allegation, however, and it should not be presented as an established cause of death. The police investigation and any subsequent medical or coroner’s findings are important before drawing conclusions, the reports added. Beyond his academic work, Arday has contributed to discussions on race equality and higher education policy. He has worked with organisations and public institutions on anti-racism strategies and has been involved with bodies including the British Sociological Association.
