KARACHI: The Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu Pakistan held its General Body meeting at Urdu Bagh, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, where members approved constitutional amendments, elected a new Governing Body for the next three years, and were briefed on the organization’s flagship Text-to-Voice OCR project.
The meeting was attended by a large number of members. During the session, the Governing Body presented its performance report, while several amendments to various clauses of the existing constitution of Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu Pakistan were proposed. The amendments were approved by a large majority through a show of hands.
Following this, elections for the office bearers and members of the Governing Body were held. The participants elected Wajid Jawad as President for a three-year term, Dr. Yasmeen Sultana Farooqi as General Secretary, Ali Khurram Zaidi as Treasurer, Syed Hasan Abbas as Joint Secretary, and Zahida Hina and Abdul Bari Farangi Mahli (Bari Mian) as Special Advisors.
Meanwhile, Asif Aziz Zubairi, Saeed-ullah Wala, Farasat Rizvi, Sabih Rahmani, Shahid Anwar Tata, Dr. Anwaar Ahmad, Dr. Najeeb Jamal, Qasim M. Qasuri, Dr. Fasih-ud-Din, and Dr. Agha Nasir were elected unopposed as members of the Governing Body.
Presenting the performance report, Acting General Secretary and Editor of QaumiZuban, Dr. Yasmeen Sultana Farooqi highlighted the organization’s achievements over the past few years. These included the publication of special editions of the monthly magazine Qaumi Zuban dedicated to eminent personalities, the publication of books, and the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with prominent national and international scholars, poets, and writers to promote Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu.
She also briefed the participants on the construction and renovation work at the Baba-e-Urdu Maulvi Abdul Haq Campus, development projects at Urdu Bagh, the preservation of manuscripts, and the organization’s future plans.
President Wajid Jawad gave a detailed briefing on the Anjuman’s flagship Text-to-Voice OCR project and informed the General Body about its significance and practical applications. He said the project would benefit Urdu enthusiasts around the world by ensuring the correct pronunciation of Urdu words in the text-to-voice system.
Developed in collaboration with the NED University, the OCR project was also demonstrated through a technical presentation by the project in-charge, which drew keen interest from the participants.
