KARACHI: Chairman of the Karachi LPG Distributors Alliance, Imran Farooqi, has expressed serious concern over the sudden and significant increase in LPG prices across the country.
He stated that while the retail price of LPG in many areas was around Rs300 per kilogram the other day, it had now risen to more than Rs400 per kilogram.
He said that according to information received from the LPG sector, importers and some LPG plant owners have significantly increased prices by citing the current situation in Iran as justification.
As a result, the financial burden was being directly passed on to the consumers.
Imran Farooqi warned that if the relevant authorities failed to intervene immediately, the retail price of the LPG could rise to Rs450–500 per kilogram within the next two to three days.
He noted that such an increase would severely affect household consumers, the hotel industry, small businesses, and commercial users.
He urged the federal government, the Ministry of Petroleum, OGRA, and other relevant authorities to take immediate notice of the extraordinary price increase, conduct a transparent investigation into its causes, and take strict legal action against those responsible if profiteering, artificial shortages, or any other illegal practices were found.
He further said that ensuring affordable and uninterrupted supply of the LPG was the responsibility of the government.
