KARACHI: Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi on Saturday said any attempt by India to use water as a political tool will be a serious threat to regional peace and stability, urging the international community to ensure the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and international obligations.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Jennifer Scott, Director of Rotary International here at the Governor House.
Referring to the IWT, Hashmi said any form of water aggression by India would amount not only a threat to regional peace and stability but a violation of international laws and treaty commitments.
He stressed that the IWT was an internationally recognised agreement that cannot be suspended or terminated unilaterally by any party. “The use of water — an essential resource for human survival— as a tool of political pressure or conflict can have serious consequences for regional peace, stability and prosperity,” the Governor asserted.
