ISLAMABAD: M/s Monnoo Energy Limited (MEL) has sought amendments in its generation licence to increase the capacity of its generation facility up to 12 MW by installing a 7.4 MW Solar PV plant.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has invited comments from stakeholders and the general public on a proposed modification in the generation licence of Monnoo Energy Limited, aimed at integrating solar power into its existing energy mix.

According to NEPRA, MEL has sought approval for a Licence Proposed Modification (LPM) under the NEPRA Licensing Regulations 2021. The company plans to enhance its total generation capacity to 12 megawatts (MW) by installing a 7.4MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant alongside its existing 4.6MW furnace oil-based thermal facility.

NEPRA stated that the original generation licence (No. SGC/010/2001), issued in December 2001 and later modified in November 2017, would be updated if the proposed changes are approved following due process.

MEL, in its application, argued that the addition of solar power would optimize its generation operations and ensure more sustainable energy production. The company further noted that the move would support bulk power consumers (BPCs), particularly those required to incorporate renewable energy into their power consumption portfolios.

With the integration of solar generation, the existing furnace oil-based plant is expected to be retained primarily for standby purposes, reducing reliance on expensive and less environmentally friendly fuel sources.

The company has also claimed that the proposed modification would lead to a reduction in electricity tariffs for its consumers without affecting the quality of service or its obligations under the current licence.
