ISLAMABAD: Car lifters, robbers, and snatchers continued their looting spree in the heavily guarded capital during the last week, depriving citizens of cash and valuables of worth million of rupees in the various parts of the city.

Data collected by Business Recorder based on reported cases at different police stations revealed that 24 cases of auto theft, six incidents of street crime, including snatching of mobile phones and cash, and nine cases of robbery as well one murder case were reported during the week.

The jurisdictions of Khanna, Ramana, Shalimar, Shehzad Town and Secretariat police stations remained the most affected areas, emerging as major crime hotspots. Residents expressed concern over the growing incidents and urged senior police officials to take effective action against organised criminal gangs operating in the capital.

In one major incident, a woman identified as Maria, 35, and her daughters Amna, 10, and Aisha 14 were killed, while her niece, Umaima, 23, were injured when an overloaded truck overturned on them due to over speeding.

Police said that the woman and the three girls were walking along roadside at the Bharakahu Bypass near Filtration Plant. A truck loaded with the flour bags appeared from Murree side at a high speed.

The driver lost control over the wheels and it turned over and fell on the woman and the girls. Maria and her daughters Amna and Aisha were pronounced dead at the emergency ward of the hospital.

During the last week, three cases of robbery and one case each of street crime and carjacking reported to the Khanna police station, one case of robbery and two cases of auto theft registered at the Shalimar police station and another case of street crime and two cases of carjacking registered at the Ramana police station.

Furthermore, Shehzad Town police registered one case of robbery. Two cases of carjacking and one case of robbery and auto theft were registered at the Secretariat police station.
