KMC Council has approved the resolutions relating to uplift projects
KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Council on Saturday approved a series of development and infrastructure-related resolutions during its general meeting chaired by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad.
At the KMC Head Office, the Council’s session attended by Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffer and council members from both treasury and opposition benches focused on development projects, civic issues and administrative matters.
Pakistan Peoples Party parliamentary leader Karamullah Waqasi said the completion of the Shahrah-e-Bhutto project reflected the party’s commitment to public welfare despite political and administrative challenges. He credited Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Sindh government and Karachi’s local leadership for supporting the project till its completion.
He said Shahrah-e-Bhutto would help reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the megacity, adding that planning for additional mega projects and signal-free corridors was also under way.
Opposition Leader Saifuddin Advocate welcomed the completion of the project and stressed the need to maintain decorum within the council. He also proposed forming a supervisory committee to monitor development schemes and ensure transparency and quality.
PTI member Asad Aman also praised the completion of Shahrah-e-Bhutto, saying continued public service would strengthen citizens’ trust in elected leadership.
During the session, the council approved 12 resolutions, including condolence motions over the deaths of former UC Nazim Izhar-ul-Haq Hassanzai, former council member Ashraf Awan, and the son and nephew of UC-7 Mominabad Chairman Idrees Shamsi, who were killed in a firing incident.
The council unanimously approved the issuance of an NOC for land allocation for a government degree college in Lyari and granted post-facto approval for expenditures related to the Gul Plaza tragedy, including Rs13 million for emergency measures and Rs30.89 million for debris removal operations.
Members also approved naming the KDA North Nazimabad Flyover after Dr Parvez Mahmood Shaheed.
Among the resolutions passed by majority vote was a tribute to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for the completion of Shahrah-e-Bhutto Phase-I.
According to the resolution, the six-lane 39-kilometer expressway connects the city with the M-9 Motorway at a cost of Rs55 billion. The foundation stone for Phase-II, extending from Qayyumabad to Karachi Port Trust, has also been laid at an estimated cost of Rs65 billion.
The council further approved Rs116.424 million for installation of 50 LED streetlights in each of Karachi’s 246 union committees and Rs199.9 million for rehabilitation and development work at Imambargahs and Muharram procession routes.
Post-facto approvals were also granted for road reconstruction work leading to PAF Airmen Academy Korangi Creek costing Rs149.99 million and renovation work at Empress Market Saddar estimated at Rs59.8 million.
In another decision, the council approved amendments related to the proposed Karachi Museum project at Beach View, authorising an agreement with the Heritage Cultural Preservation Foundation for the establishment of the museum on KMC-managed land.
