CDF Munir, Iran FM Araghchi discuss regional security, peace efforts

  • The leaders focus on efforts to prevent further escalation

Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir has met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran to discuss regional security.

The leaders focused on diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and promote long-term peace, security and stability in the West Asia, the Iranian government wrote on its X account on Saturday.

CDF Munir arrived in Tehran on Friday as part of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran, according to the military’s media wing.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) a day ago said the field marshal was received upon arrival by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was also present at the reception.

The visit comes amid intensified Pakistani mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran following the postponement of a planned second round of negotiations in Islamabad.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged Pakistan’s role in facilitating diplomatic engagement between the two sides, saying Washington remained in “constant communication” with Field Marshal Munir.

Speaking to reporters in Sweden, Rubio praised Pakistan for doing an “admirable job” in efforts aimed at brokering peace and easing tensions between the US and Iran.

“The primary interlocutor on this has been Pakistan and continues to be and they’ve done a, you know, I think an admirable job,” Rubio was quoted as saying by Fox News.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported that Naqvi held a meeting with Iranian FM Araghchi in Tehran earlier on Friday to discuss proposals aimed at resolving outstanding disputes.

Pakistan has recently intensified diplomatic engagement with both Washington and Tehran as part of broader regional efforts to reduce tensions and revive dialogue between the two countries.
