ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday framed Pakistan as a central force for peace in the Middle East, saying that recent negotiations between the United States and Iran reflected the international community’s historic trust in Islamabad.

Speaking at the 6th International Paigham-e-Islam Conference, the prime minister emphasised Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between the two countries for the first time since 1979. He highlighted talks held in Islamabad on 11 and 12 April, which culminated in a tentative ceasefire agreement.

“Pakistan has delivered a significant service aimed at ensuring peace and stability in the region,” he said.

“The trust the world has placed in our nation underscores our responsibility to act with prudence, wisdom and determination.”

PM Shehbaz credited Pakistan’s diplomatic corps, particularly Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, as well as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for bringing both sides to the negotiating table.

He also expressed gratitude to the leadership of Iran and the US for responding positively to Pakistan’s invitation.

In his address, Sharif acknowledged the contributions of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as well as the support of China, Turkey and other friendly nations, in maintaining regional stability.

He highlighted Pakistan’s deepening ties with Saudi Arabia, noting expanded defence cooperation and reaffirming the country’s commitment to protecting the holy sites of Haramain Sharifain.
