ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to press freedom, calling it a cornerstone of democracy and national strength.
In a message marking World Press Freedom Day, the President extended greetings to journalists, editors, and media professionals in Pakistan and around the world. He highlighted this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” emphasizing that lasting peace is impossible without truth. He noted that truth depends on the courage and integrity of media professionals to investigate, verify, and report facts.
The President acknowledged the growing challenges facing press freedom globally, including the spread of misinformation and disinformation, which undermine public trust and distort democratic processes.

He also pointed to the dual role of artificial intelligence, describing it as both a powerful tool and a potential risk. Journalists worldwide, he said, continue to face harassment, legal pressure, financial constraints, and physical threats. Raising concerns about the role of global media and social media platforms, the President stated that emerging technologies such as deepfakes and algorithm-driven content are increasingly being used to promote divisive narratives, including xenophobia and intolerance. He warned that non-state actors, particularly large technology companies, pose significant challenges to the independence of the press.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s constitutional commitment, the President cited Article 19 and Article 19-A as guarantees of press freedom and the public’s right to information. He stressed that a free, independent, and diverse media reflects the confidence of a nation rather than threatening it. Transparency, accountability, and open inquiry, he added, are essential pillars of a healthy democracy.
At the same time, the President emphasized that freedom must be exercised responsibly. He urged media professionals to prioritize accuracy over speed and maintain balance over partisanship, noting that public trust is the most valuable asset of the press.
Referring to recent challenges, the President highlighted coordinated misinformation campaigns targeting Pakistan. He recalled the events of May 2025, when the nation faced external aggression, stating that both the country and its media stood united. He described Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos as a symbol of national resolve and praised the media for countering false narratives with facts and clarity. The President also paid tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty, particularly in conflict zones. He called on federal and provincial governments to ensure a safe and enabling environment for media professionals, while urging media organizations to uphold ethical standards and citizens to support credible journalism.
Concluding his message, the President expressed confidence that Pakistan can build a resilient and responsible information ecosystem grounded in truth, which he described as essential for democracy, stability, and the country’s global standing.
