This is apropos a letter to the Editor titled ‘Pakistan needs to navigate a delicate balance’ carried by the newspaper yesterday. In my view, Field Marshal Asim Munir’s assertion that violence within Pakistan in response to external events will not be tolerated is both reasonable and necessary.
No state can allow its internal order to be compromised by developments beyond its borders. Equally important were his remarks emphasising diplomacy, de-escalation, and the need to counter misinformation and sectarian narratives.
Pakistan needs to navigate a delicate balance: acknowledging and respecting public sentiment while firmly upholding the rule of law. Emotional reactions to developments in the wider region are natural, but they must be channelled constructively. The alternative—unchecked anger spilling into violence—serves no cause and only creates challenges at home.
