ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has appointed a sitting judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC) as an appellate tribunal to hear the appeals related to by-election on a Punjab Assembly seat scheduled this June.

In this context, the poll body has issued a public notice regarding the by-election on the PP-83 Khushab III seat, scheduled on 6th June.

Relatedly, the ECP has notified the appointment of LHC judge Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal as Appellate Tribunal for disposal of appeals against the decisions of the returning officer concerned regarding the rejection or the acceptance of the nomination papers of the candidates for PP-83.

The Section 63(1) of the Elections Act, 2017 empowers the ECP to appoint the judges of the high courts as the appellate tribunals in consultation with the chief justices of the HCs concerned.

As per the schedule for the said by-election issued by the poll body last week, the filing of the nominations would continue from 27 to 29 April, and the names of the nominated candidates for the by-election would be published on 30 April.

The last date for filing of appeals against the ROs’ decisions is May 11, whereas the last date for the appellate tribunal to decide these appeals is 14th May.

The PP-83 had fallen vacant earlier this month following the death of Ali Hussain Khan from the ruling party Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), who had won this seat in February 2024 general elections. Khan passed away in Lahore on 8tth April following prolonged illness.
