‘Violations of ceasefire’: PM Shehbaz urges all parties to exercise restraint for two weeks
- Trump announces agreement to a two-week ceasefire with Iran
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Wednesday violations of ceasefire had been reported at few places across the conflict zone which he said undermine the spirit of peace process.
The development comes after a two-week ceasefire was announced between the US and Iran, brokered by Pakistan.
“Violations of ceasefire have been reported at few places across the conflict zone which undermine the spirit of peace process. I earnestly and sincerely urge all parties to exercise restraint and respect the ceasefire for two weeks, as agreed upon, so that diplomacy can take a lead role towards peaceful settlement of the conflict,” the premier wrote in a post on X.
Earlier, PM Sharif welcomed the two-week ceasefire announced between Iran and the US and termed it a “sagacious gesture”.
“With the greatest humility, I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere, including Lebanon and elsewhere, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY,” the premier wrote on X.
He extended his deepest gratitude to the leadership of both countries and invited their delegations to Islamabad on Friday, 10th April 2026, to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes.
“Both parties have displayed remarkable wisdom and understanding and have remained constructively engaged in furthering the cause of peace and stability,” he wrote.
The premier said that they hoped that the ‘Islamabad Talks’ would succeed in achieving sustainable peace and wished to share more good news in the coming days!
His statement comes after Trump announced that he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, saying that the deal was subject to Iran’s agreement to pause its blockade of oil and gas supplies through the strait, which typically handles about one-fifth of global oil shipments.
Earlier, PM Shehbaz had requested that Trump make a two-week extension to a deadline he imposed on Iran to end its blockade of Gulf oil.
“To allow diplomacy to run its course, I earnestly request President Trump to extend the deadline for two weeks. Pakistan, in all sincerity, requests the Iranian brothers to open Strait of Hormuz for a corresponding period of two weeks as a goodwill gesture,” the premier said in a post on X.
He also urged “all warring parties” to observe a ceasefire everywhere for two weeks to allow diplomacy to achieve a conclusive termination of war”.
He added that diplomatic efforts to settle the war peacefully were “progressing steadily, strongly and powerfully with the potential to lead to substantive results in the near future”.

Meanwhile, in his post, the US president said, “This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!”
“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”
Trump said Iran had presented a 10-point proposal that was a “workable basis” for negotiations and that he expected an agreement to be “finalised and consummated” during the two-week ceasefire.
As per Reuters, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions, has said it would suspend its operations in Iraq and across the region for two weeks, according to a statement issued on Wednesday.
Thousands of people have been killed across the Middle East in the Iran war that began on February 28 with US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
Gratitude to ‘brotherly countries’
In a separate post on X, PM Shehbaz expressed gratitude to “brotherly countries”, including China, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Egypt, and Qatar for “extending invaluable and all out support towards reaching the ceasefire and giving peaceful diplomatic efforts a chance to seek a comprehensive and conclusive end to the conflict”.
“I would also like to deeply appreciate and thank our brotherly countries of Gulf Cooperation Council, whose consistent support and commitment to peace and stability in the region remains quintessential for our efforts,” he wrote. “The leadership of all our brotherly countries and United States of America demonstrated exceptional strategic foresight, sagacity and patience in giving peace a chance. I also thank all our partners and friends across the globe who have reached out and acknowledged Pakistan’s sincere efforts for the global peace. Let us all work together to forge a lasting peace in the region and beyond.”
