KARACHI: Central Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has strongly condemned the United States President Donald Trump, describing him as a risk to global peace due to policies aimed at destabilising both regional and global order.
Addressing a press conference at Idara Noor-e-Haq, the JI Karachi headquarters on Monday, Hafiz Naeem demanded that the United Nations take formal notice of Trump’s statements and their implications. He warned against placing global affairs in the hands of what he called an unstable man.
Expressing solidarity with Iran, the JI Chief praised the nation’s steadfastness against pressure from the United States and Israel. He accused Washington and Tel Aviv of pursuing a “Greater Israel” agenda, asserting that the conflict stems not merely from politics but from religious extremism and ideological motives.
Regarding Palestine, the JI leader said the Muslim world’s leadership had failed to respond adequately to the situation at Al-Aqsa Mosque and in Gaza. He urged Pakistan to take a leading diplomatic role alongside Saudi Arabia and Turkiye in devising a regional strategy on Palestine.
He also called for closer defence coordination among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Iran, and demanded completion of the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline as well as independent trade ties with Tehran without succumbing to American pressure.
On domestic issues, Hafiz Naeem demanded the immediate abolition of levies on petroleum products and electricity, accusing the government of sharply increasing fuel prices before offering only partial relief. He said the burden on the poor and middle class continues to grow through excessive taxation while large loans of influential people are written off.
He called for a review of agreements with independent power producers (IPPs), proposing that “take-and-pay” arrangements be converted into “use-and-pay” models. He claimed Pakistan is paying around USD 538,000 daily on idle LNG terminal infrastructure for capacity not being fully utilised.
He further demanded an immediate reduction in petrol prices, warning that rising transport fares and inflation are fuelling public unrest. He criticised the ruling elite’s “lavish lifestyles and protocol culture” and suggested no government official should be allowed to use a vehicle exceeding 1300cc at state expense.
Regarding Karachi’s civic situation, he said recent rainfall of 38 millimetres had again exposed the performance of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party-led Sindh government, alleging the city remains in a state of decay and neglect.
Hafiz Naeem directed Saifuddin Advocate, the KMC opposition leader, to expedite the no-confidence motion process to remove the “illegally and unconstitutionally installed” mayor.
The JI Chief said his party remains the only one capable of rebuilding Karachi and other parts of Pakistan, adding that it is investing in youth education and striving to become the true voice of the nation.
Earlier last night, he inaugurated the newly renovated Shahrah-e-Humayoun and Jefco Ground in North Nazimabad. He congratulated area residents on their successful struggle to free the ground and thanked the lawyers’ fraternity, particularly Mudasir Rehman, for free legal services in the matter.
Separately, the JI Chief called on Muslim League Functional head, Pir Sahab Pagara to discuss the national political landscape.
