Rain, thunderstorms to continue in Karachi, says Met Office

As a persistent westerly wave continues to grip most parts of the country, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Thursday forecast more rains and thunderstorms for Karachi and other parts of Sindh.

According to the latest advisory, rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by strong winds and isolated hailstorms, are likely in Karachi division and several other districts of the province including Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Umerkot, and Mirpurkhas.

Whereas, districts such as Larkana, Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Ghotki are expected to see rain and thunderstorms with occasional gaps.

According to the Met Office’s three-day outlook, Karachi is set for a volatile weather weekend. While intermittent rain is expected to continue through Thursday, the city will see a brief respite with sunny skies on Friday, before a fresh spell of rain returns to batter the provincial capital on Saturday.

The PMD has highlighted the risk of lightning strikes at isolated places and advised farmers to take immediate steps to protect their crops from the prevailing conditions.

The warning comes as Karachi reels from a devastating spell of weather on Wednesday. At least 16 people were killed and dozens more were injured.

High-velocity winds caused significant damage to homes and disrupted traffic on key thoroughfares.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from electric poles and solar panels during the current weather system.
