KARACHI: In a significant step toward reviving and promoting the rich historical and cultural heritage of Karachi, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has planned to construct a museum and heritage site at the historic Chaukhandi Tombs.
The intricately designed Chaukhandi Tombs, dating back to the 16th century during the Mughal era, represent one of the most remarkable archaeological and architectural treasures of the region. These elaborately carved sandstone tombs stand as a testament to the city’s centuries-old artistic and cultural legacy.
During his visit to the site, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab directed concerned officials to prepare a comprehensive feasibility plan for the establishment of an international-standard museum, construction of a protective boundary wall, and development of open public spaces to facilitate both local and international visitors.
The initiative aims to transform the historic site into a globally recognized heritage destination, welcoming tourists, researchers, and history enthusiasts from around the world.
The Mayor emphasized that Karachi is home to numerous historical landmarks that were neglected in the past. Under the vision of the Chairman of Pakistan Peoples’ Party, the city administration is determined to restore Karachi’s historical identity and present its cultural heritage to the world in a dignified and organized manner. “We want to revive the true historical face of Karachi and showcase our heritage on an international platform. To achieve this, we must improve infrastructure, ensure accessibility, and create an environment where citizens and tourists can learn about and appreciate our rich past,” the Mayor stated.
