ISLAMABAD: The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday renewed its demand for the immediate transfer of former prime minister Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital, warning the government of severe repercussions if any harm is inflicted on Khan’s eye due to further delays.
The party called for the immediate and unrestricted access of Khan’s personal physicians, Dr Aasim and Dr Faisal, as well as a family member with medical knowledge, to conduct the necessary medical tests immediately.
In a statement, the PTI emphasised that the issue is not just political but a matter of national trust, human rights, and government accountability.
The party expressed concern that the lack of transparency surrounding Khan’s health is only fuelling public unease, rather than alleviating it.
“Imran Khan is a former prime minister and the voice of millions both in Pakistan and abroad. Any uncertainty regarding his health is unacceptable,” the statement read.
It further argued that if the government has nothing to hide, there should be no delay in ensuring full transparency and access for Khan’s medical team.
The PTI called for Khan’s personal doctors to be granted immediate access to perform all necessary medical examinations, including blood tests and any other diagnostic procedures.
The party also insisted that, if required, Khan be allowed to seek treatment at a hospital or diagnostic centre of his choice.
“Time is already running out. Further delays are not acceptable,” the PTI concluded, underscoring the urgent need for clarity on the former prime minister’s health.
In a separate development, the PTI launched a fierce attack on the Punjab government over its purchase of a Gulfstream business jet, valued between USD 38 million and USD 42 million (over Rs11 billion), a sum greater than the cost of the recent privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
The party branded the purchase of the luxury jet, exclusively for the personal use of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the niece of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as a glaring example of government excess amid the country’s deepening economic crisis.
The PTI condemned the purchase of the jet as outrageously hypocritical, particularly in the face of the country’s crippling economic crisis, skyrocketing unemployment, and rampant inflation.
It questioned the logic behind such extravagant spending at a time when 45 percent of Pakistan’s population lives below the poverty line, and the nation remains heavily reliant on foreign loans to stay afloat.
The PTI accused the government of being out of touch with the struggles of ordinary citizens and warned that the public would not tolerate the misuse of state funds for personal luxuries.
“The masses will not tolerate the misuse of taxpayer money for such obscene luxuries,” the PTI warned, vowing to hold those responsible fully accountable for what it called the reckless squandering of state resources.
