Pakistan to face India in high-stakes T20 World Cup clash

  • India hold the upper hand in recent World Cup history, having dominated previous encounters

Pakistan will face India in a decisive Group ‘A’ fixture of the T20 World Cup at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday, with a Super Eights berth at stake.

The contest, scheduled for Feb 15, regained certainty earlier this week after Pakistan withdrew its brief boycott call following consultations among the Pakistan Cricket Board, the International Cricket Council and the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

The 35,000-capacity stadium has been sold out, and hundreds of millions are expected to watch globally. Both sides have won their opening two matches, meaning Sunday’s winner will move to six points and secure qualification for the next round.

Historically, India have dominated the rivalry in T20 World Cup contests, holding a 7-1 advantage over Pakistan. They also defeated Pakistan three times in last year’s Asia Cup, including the final.

Addressing a pre-match press conference on Saturday, Pakistan captain Salman Agha said his team remained prepared despite the off-field developments.

“We were always ready for the match,” he said after Saturday’s training session. He expressed confidence in off-spinner Usman Tariq, backing him as a key option against India’s batting line-up.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged the magnitude of the encounter, saying it was “more than just another game.” He confirmed that 25-year-old opener Abhishek Sharma has recovered from illness and is likely to feature.

Rain has been forecast for Sunday evening in Colombo, potentially adding another variable to one of cricket’s most closely watched fixtures.
