ISLAMABAD: In a bold move, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial on Wednesday offered to name influential individuals blocking the bureau’s crackdown on tax evasion and fraud, surprising members of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance.
Langrial proposed the parliamentary panel to hold an in-camera briefing to disclose the names of individuals who are allegedly making significant efforts to block the FBR’s enforcement actions against tax evaders.
He emphasized the need for an in-camera session of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance to privately disclose these names, citing concerns over potential backlash. “I want to share the identities of these individuals who are hindering the FBR’s crackdown on fraudsters,” he added.
He added that, if the committee deems it appropriate, the names could be disclosed later during the same session.

When contacted by Business Recorder, government sources familiar with the matter said that Langrial was referring to politicians and businessmen with strong political ties, who are allegedly attempting to block the enforcement action against tax evaders.
Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb briefed the committee, stating that SMS notifications were sent exclusively to registered bank account holders, leading to improved tax collection. He categorically denied any breach of financial privacy.
Speaking to the media later, Langrial expressed confidence that the FBR would meet its revenue collection target for February 2026. He also revealed that the FBR had so far recovered Rs70 billion under the Super Tax.
