HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Commissioner Fayaz Hussain Abbasi has emphasized that complete eradication of polio requires collective efforts from all concerned departments and partner organizations. He noted that the last polio case in the Hyderabad Division was reported in September from Badin district, describing it as a matter of serious concern largely caused by missed children during vaccination campaigns.

He expressed these views while speaking at a polio panel discussion during the SMART Conference organized by Rotary International at a local hall in Hyderabad. The commissioner said that a joint strategy is being implemented in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and other partners, adding that there is hope environmental samples from the division will soon turn negative, paving the way toward a polio-free Sindh and Pakistan.

Highlighting the importance of capacity building, the Commissioner stated that effective training of frontline workers is crucial, as improper administration of polio drops has been observed in some areas.

He said special focus is being given to training Lady Health Workers and field staff to ensure correct vaccination of every child.

The conference was attended by EOC Sindh Coordinator Shehryar Memon, WHO Sindh Head Dr Sagheer Ahmed, Divisional Director Information Shaheed Benazirabad, and Rotary International Public Image Coordinator Muhammad Musa Gondal, along with health officials, partner organizations, and frontline workers.

The event focused on strengthening coordination, improving community engagement, and accelerating efforts to eliminate polio from the region.
