That the US President Donald Trump has made a very strong case for his candidature for the Nobel peace prize is a fact. It was he, for example, who brokered a ceasefire between Indian and Pakistan in May last year to avert a possible nuclear war between the two South Asian nations, although the BJP government in New Delhi has not officially acknowledged or confirmed the role the US President played towards ending the conflict for whatever reasons.
President Trump has been quoted as saying that ”Norway [Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for selecting the Nobel Peace Prize laureates] is very embarrassed with what took place. Whether people like Trump or don’t like Trump, I settled eight wars—big ones. Some going on for 36 years, 32 years, 31 years, 28 years, 25 years. Some just getting to start, like India and Pakistan, where already eight jets were shot out in the air.”
In my view, President Trump is spot on; he is a world leader who has singularly helped the warring nations in various parts of the world achieve peace. He, therefore, deserves Nobel Prize. But before he gets this peace prize, he must use his good offices to broker a sustainable or durable ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. There is no doubt about the fact that President Trump, as stated by the White House, is making good on his commitment to restore safety and security around the world.
