LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has said the Kissan Card initiative has brought about a fundamental shift in the direction of agriculture in the province, with a bumper wheat crop expected this year.
According to official figures, loans amounting to Rs100 billion have been disbursed to farmers through the Kissan Card, enabling them to purchase agricultural inputs without difficulty. The increased access to credit has led to record wheat cultivation across Punjab’s fertile farmlands.
The chief minister was informed that a new record was set in December with the sale of approximately 1.356 million metric tonnes of urea fertiliser. Punjab’s farmers purchased 37 per cent more urea fertiliser compared to the same period last year. So far, Rs100bn has been released to farmers under the scheme, out of which Rs65bn has already been utilised. Farmers spent Rs47bn on the purchase of fertiliser alone.
The CM said the Kissan Card had not only transformed Punjab’s agricultural landscape but also restored confidence among farmers. She said farmers now had access to capital, technology and financial resources through the Kissan Card.
She emphasised that the progress of farmers was essential for the development of Pakistan.
