ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the proceedings of a case against Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sohail Afridi, and Sheharnaz Omar Ayub Khan, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed candidate for the recently held by-election on a National Assembly’s seat in Haripur, due to a death of a family member of the KP CM’s counsel.
During the proceedings of the case on Wednesday, ECP’s five-member full bench, led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, was informed that the father-in-law of Ali Bukhari, the KP CM’s counsel in the case, had passed away.
On hearing this news, the bench postponed the case. The next hearing date is likely to be issued soon.
The NA-18 had fallen vacant following the disqualification of Omar Ayub Khan at the hands of an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in a case registered in connection with the 9 May riots.
On 20th November, the ECP said that it took notice of KP CM’s public speech in Havelian, a tehsil of district Abbottabad, delivered on 19th November.
The poll entity accused CM Afridi of threatening the district administration, police, and electoral officials assigned to conduct the NA-18 by-election, which was held on 23rd November.
