KARACHI: A meeting of the Standing Committee on Home Affairs was held at the Sindh Assembly Building, Karachi, chaired by the Committee Chairperson, Faryal Talpur.
A six-point agenda was presented in the meeting, on which the IGP Sindh along with the relevant DIGs gave a point-to-point briefing.
The agenda included arrests of drug mafia members, performance of the forensic lab, investigation regarding chemically adulterated milk, cases against land mafia, the proposal for a Provincial Cyber Crime Unit, and police operations in the Katcha areas.
Addressing the meeting, Talpur said that drugs are a curse destroying the future of our children, and no leniency will be tolerated in the strict crackdown against them. She emphasised that zero-tolerance policy against drug dealers must continue. Speaking on the issue of land mafia, she said that land grabbing is unacceptable anywhere in Sindh.
She stressed that the committee’s recommendations and actions must strictly follow merit. Regarding the proposal for establishing a Cyber Crime Unit, she directed that if any correspondence has been initiated in this regard, it should be immediately placed before her so the matter can be taken up with the federal government. Expressing satisfaction over the ongoing police operations in the katcha areas, she said that the DIGs of Larkana and Sukkur, along with young officers, have performed exceptionally well. She also appreciated SSP Larkana & for the encounter that resulted in the killing of the notorious dacoit Saathi Jatoi, and praised the performance of SSP City as well.
Speaking during the meeting, the Sindh Home Minister Zia-Ul-Hassan Lanjar informed that joint operations against drugs are underway across the province with the collaboration of Sindh Police, Excise, and ANF. He added that strict joint checking is being carried out by all three agencies at the entry and exit points of Sindh.
He stated that, owing to clear instructions from the Sindh government, extensive operations are being conducted against drug dealers. He said that he is heading the committee formed on the instructions of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to address the issue of land grabbing, which includes the IG Sindh, Addl. IG Karachi, Commissioner Karachi, and representatives of ABAD.
The Sindh Home Minister emphasised that merit is the first priority in all decisions of the committee. Speaking about the ongoing operation in the Katcha areas, he said that so far 71 dacoits have surrendered under the surrender policy. He added that the operation is now moving towards Ghotki; anyone who surrenders will be dealt with according to the law, otherwise strict action will be taken. The Home Minister appreciated the performance of DIGs Larkana and Sukkur and commended young officers, as well.
During the meeting, the IGP Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon briefed the Standing Committee in detail about the ongoing provincial-level operations, actions against criminal elements, and the overall security situation. He informed that large-scale operations have been conducted against drug dealers across the province, and 12,623 suspects have been arrested through 9,810 FIRs.
During these operations, 26 suspects were injured and 7 were killed. Significant results were also achieved in actions against gutka and mawa; 12,407 suspects were arrested in 9,786 cases. Under a special campaign targeting drug supply to educational institutions, 68 out of 75 listed suspects have been arrested. Details of police actions against those involved in selling chemically adulterated or harmful milk were also presented in the meeting. The IGP informed that 9 suspects have been arrested in 7 cases.
Faryal Talpur expressed strong concern, stating that those who endanger human health deserve no leniency. She directed the IG Sindh, Addl IG Karachi, and Commissioner Karachi to ensure every possible measure against such crimes.
Briefing on the operations against land mafia across the province, the IGP Sindh informed that 769 suspects have been arrested in 326 cases. He said that Sindh Police is implementing a zero-tolerance policy against crime, and the crackdown continues without interruption. Speaking about the ongoing operations in the Katcha areas, the IG Sindh informed that, as a result of courageous police actions, 1,368 dacoits have been arrested and 508 injured dacoits have been taken into custody - this is in addition to the total arrests. During this period, 190 dacoits were killed in police encounters.
He added that several dangerous and most-wanted criminals have been arrested, including Adam Teghani, Fareed Teghani, Hakim Ali Teghani, and Niazu. These suspects were involved in serious crimes such as murder, dacoity, robbery, kidnapping for ransom, and honey-trap cases. He noted that the Sindh government had announced a reward of 2 million rupees for the arrest (dead or alive) of Hakim Ali Teghani.
The IGP Sindh said that the police are utilising all resources to eliminate crime and uphold the rule of law, and operations will continue without pause. He also informed the meeting that the proposal for establishing a Provincial Cyber Crime Unit has been sent to the federal government. He stated that the rate of kidnapping for ransom has fallen to zero, while work on four honey-trap cases continues across the province.
The meeting was attended by MPAs and Committee Members Saima Agha, Sohail Anwar Siyal, Sham Sunder, Sadia Javed, Khurram Karim Soomro, Muhammad Qasim Soomro, Muhammad Farooq, Sajjad Ali, and Shariq Jamal, along with the Additional Chief Secretary, the Secretaries of Excise and Law, Additional IGs, CTD Karachi officials, and all DIGs of Sindh.
