Power outages in Nov: Karachi braved shortage of 884m gallons of water

KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has released data on water shortages caused by power outages at various water pumping stations in the city during November 2025.

According to a spokesperson for the Water Corporation, the megacity faced a total water shortage of 884 million gallons due to continuous power outages by K-Electric in November. As much as 424 million gallons of water were lost due to a 132-hour and 20-minute power outage at Dhabeji Pumping Station. Similarly, 111 million gallons of water were recorded due to a 146-hour outage at Damloti Station.

The water shortage at North East Karachi Pumping Station was 335 million gallons, while Hub and Pipri stations suffered 6 million gallons each, and Gharo Station suffered 2 million gallons of water.

On this occasion, Water Corporation officials said that due to continuous power outages in November, operations at the central pumping stations remained suspended for several hours and water supply was affected.

The officials demanded that the K-Electric administration should take immediate steps to ensure a constant, stable and uninterrupted power supply to the central pumping stations.

They said that serious notice should also be taken of the damage caused to the pumping machinery because of repeated cable faults, and steps like alternative feeders, standby cables and technical upgradation in the central pumping stations are indispensable so that the water supply system in the city can be protected from any kind of disruption in the future.

The spokesperson said that the Water Corporation is continuing close communication and coordinated cooperation with K-Electric for an uninterrupted water supply to the citizens. He said that after the restoration of power by K-Electric, water supply has completely returned to normal across the city.

According to the spokesperson, all possible steps are being taken to further improve the water supply system so that citizens do not face any problems in the continuous supply of water and the needs of the city can be met.
