ISLAMABAD: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday called his Pakistani and Afghan counterparts and expressed Tehran’s readiness to help de-escalate “tensions” between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Diplomatic sources said that Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi contacted Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi by phone and said that Iran is ready to provide all possible assistance and play a role of a mediator for reconciliation between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In the telephone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart, the two sides discussed bilateral ties as well as the latest regional and international developments, reported the Iranian media.

The Iranian Foreign Minister expressed concern over the recent fighting along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, and called upon the two sides to acknowledge the importance of sustained dialogue between Islamabad and Kabul. He said that regional countries should also play a constructive role in helping the two sides resolve “disputes” peacefully and prevent further escalation.

Araghchi said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to provide any form of assistance to help reduce tensions and promote dialogue between Islamabad and Kabul.”

Ishaq Dar informed his Iranian counterpart about the details of the third round of talks with Afghanistan as well as the current situation. Dar said that maintaining regional peace and stability is of utmost importance. Both sides agreed to continue communication and consultations on this issue.
