KARACHI: Education is the most neglected sector in Pakistan, when the country is celebrating the international teacher’s day today, said Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor here Sunday.

He said the government has neglected education, and teachers are on the streets to demand their salaries and pensions. He said recently schools in the whole Sindh province remained closed for many days as the teachers were protesting against new salary and pension schemes of the government.

He said more than a dozen of Karachi University’s retired teachers have died without payment of their pension. He said the Karachi University management including vice chancellor has ruined this largest university of Pakistan.

He said the government schools are marred with corruption on one hand and the other private education sector is being commercialised rapidly. He said the amenity plots allocated for education in private housing societies are being handed over to commercial entities for setting up very costly private schools, which is sheer injustice to teachers, students and parents.

In this regard he gave the example of the Adamjee Nagar, Kathiawar Memon Housing Society Karachi where schools and amenity plots for social welfare purposes are given to private commercial entities for running very costly private school chains.

He welcomed a recent decision of the Punjab government to shift very small rural schools to nearby bigger schools where better facilities are present. He said this policy should also be replicated in Sindh where thousands of small rural schools are practically closed down.

He demanded to update the syllabus of schools, colleges and universities, as the present syllabus taught by them is totally outdated. He said technical and vocational education should be promoted to end joblessness in the country.

He demanded that at least one general university, one engineering college and one teaching hospital should be established in each and every district of Pakistan.

He congratulated the teachers on the international teacher’s day and pledged that his party would always raise a strong voice for their rights.
