KARACHI: In light of the prevailing conditions impacting bilateral and transit trade, Junaid Makda, President of the Pakistan Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI) expressed serious concern as all five major border crossings” Chaman, Torkham, Ghulam Khan Kelay, Angoor Adda, and Kharlachi” are presently closed.

The ongoing closure has led to significant financial losses for stakeholders and businesses, with billions of rupees incurred in detention and demurrage charges.

Furthermore, the spoilage of perishable items in trucks stranded at the closed borders has added to the economic impact, affecting the livelihoods of many involved in the trade sector.

The closure of these vital borders has also resulted in a halt to export and import activities to the CIS countries, leaving traders and businesses in a state of uncertainty.

This situation not only disrupts the flow of goods and services but poses a severe threat to the stability of Pakistan’s economy.

President PAJCCI urgently calls for immediate action to resolve the current crisis and reopen the border crossings.

In light of the pressing issues faced by the business community, PAJCCI appeals to the authorities to address the concerns of stakeholders and take swift measures to facilitate the resumption of trade activities.

Junaid Makda emphasises the need for a diplomatic and cooperative approach to find a resolution that benefits both countries and prevents further economic repercussions.

PAJCCI remains committed to fostering strong economic ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan and believes that collaborative efforts can overcome the current challenges and urge the respective governments to prioritise the interests of the business community and work towards a swift and amicable resolution.
