ISLAMABAD: The federal government has been considering a proposal for increasing Rs500 per mmbtu gas tariff for 60 percent protected gas consumers’ category and more burden would be passed on to non-protected gas consumers.

This was disclosed by Caretaker Energy Minister Muhammad Ali on Monday in a media talk. He said the caretaker government had decided that the impact of the gas increase on the poor would not be more than Rs500 per month.

He said the circular gas debt reached an estimated Rs2,800 billion including Rs800 billion late payment surcharge (LPG). “The gas companies are facing Rs350 billion losses annually and Rs1 billion per day as buying imported LNG at $13 per mmbtu and supplying at subsidise $1.5 per mmbtu,” the minister explained.

Summary seeking up to 50pc raise in gas sale prices re-submitted

He further said the interim government had been working on three models for 14 state-owned power sector entities on the active lists of Privatisation Commission.

However, the final decision would be taken in the federal cabinet meeting, he added. He said the privatisation of 10 DISCOs was under study in collaboration with IFC (World Bank).

New members in the board of directors of DISCOs would be replaced with technical and experts, he added. The government had three options to reduce the losses of DISCOs: provincialization, long-term contract with management control or privatisation of entities.

I think the minister incharge for petroleum evaded the main issue of gas theft and is trying to hide behind the veil the cost of lng provided to domestic consumer at subsidised rates. The minister may be unaware of the slabing system of tarrif which has beeen imposed and billions of Pkr is recieved from pocket of thepoor consumer through this illogical system. The revamping of management is the utmost need who badly failed to curb the menace of theft inspitte getting Pkr7 Mn /Pm salaries excluding perks and previelages. The cost of lost gas due to inefficiency of management should not be recieved from the consumers .

Protected gas consumers: Rs500 per mmbtu gas tariff hike under study. They will damn care for the common man. The tariff hike is under study of those who enjoy free gas. It is just like electricity tariff being under study of those who enjoy free electricity. They also damn care for the ordinary citizens. As a responsible tax payer of Pakistan, I am extremely angry at the very idea of free supply of any utility, be it electricity or the gas. I wonder why people are not raising their voice against this practice.

@Ghareeb Awam, why aren’t you? An apparently “extremely angry individual”, commenting in the comment section of a newspapers article is not “raising your voice”. As with everything else in the country, blaming other people is always the first go to stance. They know you won’t come out, neither will anyone else, and until the people come out to the streets with unity and discipline, not under some political party’s flag, actual people like you and me, things will never change, no need to be “extremely angry” you’re only hurting yourself.

Gas prices are very very low. Fixed charges should be based on area wise. People reading in big houses should pay more irrespective whether their consumption is low or high. People living in posh areas where their house values in carores paying only 180 Rs minimum charges and people who are living in down town paying same 180 Rs which is not fair. Protected customers minimum charges should be atleast 1000 and for non protected atleast 2000 enabling these gas utilities to stay profitable other wise close these companies and sale bottle gas where no loss of gas no issue of recoveries

Really the circular debt is the issue here cleagly same is happening in oil and gas sector. Ipp is reaponsible for high coat of electrcity. Solution. Sell solar panels with electric bills on installments With net metering the cost will go down. Induction-electric stoves can cook as well Fans and lights can be operated with solar plates without the use of battaries even during day time.
