ISLAMABAD: A delegation from Indus Motor Company, led by Vice Chairman Shinji Yanagi and Chief Executive Ali Asghar Jamali, met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday at the PM’s Office to showcase the first locally-manufactured Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV).

Also participating in the meeting was Yoshiki Konishi, President, Toyota Asia, who is also the Chief Engineer of the Corolla Cross. Mitsuhiro Wada, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, also graced the occasion alongwith Members of the Cabinet, including Federal Minister of Finance Ishaq Dar and Federal Minister of Industries & Production, Makhdoom Murtaza Mehmood.

The PM commended Toyota’s initiative in bringing the first locally-manufactured Hybrid SUV to Pakistan and emphasised the need to further localisation efforts in the country as well as focus on exports.

He further assured to uphold the incentives for HEVs as outlined in the AIDEP 2021-26 Policy.

Federal Minister of Finance Ishaq Dar also appreciated the Corolla Cross Hybrid and the benefits the country would derive from the new technology both economically and environmentally.

Toyota Asia’s President Yoshiki Konishi said: “For over 30 years, Toyota has contributed to Pakistan, thanks to the support of the government and people of Pakistan. I feel the Corolla, a product that is dear to my heart, has become Pakistan’s “people’s car” in terms of brand and meets Toyota’s vision of “Mobility for All”.

“With the launch of the new Corolla Cross HEV, we strongly believe that this HEV technology will become a solution that can gain scale and allow for accessible electrification in Pakistan, as it uses a relatively small battery and requires no additional infrastructure. It has also been proven to reduce Carbon Emissions and Improve Fuel Consumption by 30 – 50% based on research by external agencies in several countries.”

Locally assembled would be a better description, wouldn't it? What's the ratio of locally sourced parts is a big question.

Good job Toyota. Its hard to find good news these days for Pakistan. Even locally assembled is better than completely built imported units.

The wrath of God on those who lie. Indeed japanese are lying and are very good at speaking lies. Lying assembling in the name of manufacturing is a very big lie to an industrial sector, to its govt and to its people. Shahbaz Sharif must not fall prey to it. kick japanese and western companies from Pakistan. Bring in Chinese companies and give them the market domination. You have my words and believe me "China will manufacture every single component of a bike and vehicle in Pakistan if japanese companies are thrown out of Pakistan". Chinese will manufacture every single component in the country using local resources and local talent and local raw material and Chinese will even export vehicles from Pakistan which contribute a lot to global supply chains. So please throw japanese and western companies out of Pakistan and bring in Chinese companies to Pakistan.

A good news for Corolla lovers who can now buy CKD Toyota Cross SUV. It is expected the prices of it are determined reasonably lower than other Havel HeV etc so that people are encouraged to buy it without giving a second thought .

Actually the first locally assembled HEV was Haval. So Toyota lost the race there. Anyways good initiative to diversify the market.

Toyota is misleading the PM. The hybrid model which is being introduced falls in the luxury category. It is a 1.8L Corolla Cross SUV, which will cost upward of 1.5 crore. No small hybrid hatchbacks are being introduced by the Big Three (Toyota, Honda & Suzuki) in Pakistan to cater for the masses. Also, the hybrid vehicle in question will be 'assembled' and not 'manufacturered' in Pakistan, which will further strain foreign exchange reserves. Already basic engine parts such as oil and air filters of ordinary corolla models are being sold for a whopping Rs. 3500 and Rs. 7500 price tags by the dealerships. These are Thai manufactured parts. If Toyota Indus is serious in local manufacturing of parts for its vehicles, then they should start by using locally manufactured oil and air filters in their vehicles. This has to stop and the Honourable pm needs to be mindful of Toyota's and other companies' deceptive claims of local 'manufacturing' which is in fact local 'assembling'.

Another junk in the feather of IMC. Hybrids are just too complex to maintain, with everything electronically or dual (elect. + mech), softwares, high / low voltage system, 4 to 6 different cooling systems, unreliable CVT transmission, lighter than ever body, poor quality & safety compromised by IMC, at an enormous cost of Rs 10+ Million.... perfect recepi for disaster on wheels
