Published October 31, 2020

Lazada Group, an Asian e-commerce platform, reports that the grocery arm of the company was hacked. The Alibaba-owned company suffered from a data hack of 1.1 million accounts.

The breach was discovered on the 29th of October and involved the database of its RedMart online supermarket site, which was hosted by a third-party service provider.

The company reported that customer data including names, phone numbers, encrypted passwords and partial credit card numbers were exposed to the hackers.Lazada Group claims that the data was more than 18 months out of date and was last updated in March 2019.

E-commerce companies like Lazada are goldmines for customer data, which has become increasingly important for businesses, marketers, political parties and the government. Hence, with the world moving towards increased digitization, a data breach such as this one raises serious concerns regarding consumer privacy.

The Singapore-based e-commerce company has taken action to block unauthorized access to the database.
