ISLAMABAD: The special assistant to the prime minister on political communication Dr Shahbaz Gill on Saturday alleged that arrest of Captain Safdar (retd) - the husband of Maryam Safdar - at a hotel in Karachi was a "pre-planned drama" staged by opposition parties after being miserably failed to get an NRO [national reconciliation ordinance] from Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Speaking at a presser here, the flamboyant aide of the prime minister claimed that after the incident, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari reportedly got angry and he met with Inspector General Police Sindh and subsequently police officers applied for leave.

"Then leaders in opposition urged the army chief, ISI chief and others to hold an inquiry into the matter. It was nothing but a pre-planned drama staged by a frustrated opposition," he added. He said for the last 40 years, two families were "lying to the nation, instigating falsehood and giving impression as what they were saying it was all truth". "Maryam Safdar tried to use Baloch students despite the fact that their issue of scholarship had already been resolved by the Governor Punjab Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar," he added. Gill alleged that ex-premier Nawaz Sharif, his incarcerated brother Shehbaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Safdar were involved in corruption and they wanted people to accept their lies.

He described Maryam as a "certified liar and fraudster" who was lying all the time, adding that "these people had gone berserk to achieve their interests, but a man like PM Khan at the helm of affairs, it is not possible".

Gill said "Supreme Court of Pakistan wrote in its verdict that Maryam had submitted fake documents" and she was declared a "certified liar" and also got involved "Safdar Awan and her brother in her activities".

After coming out of the jail, Maryam was creating narrative against the institutions, he added.

Gill said Maryam cried before others when she was not allowed to go abroad, adding she wanted to go out from jail on the pretext of taking care of her father in London.

He underlined the need for doing away with double standards and said there should be same rules for the rich and the poor.

Maryam "wrongly claimed" that her room door was broken open in a hotel in Karachi and then TV channels were given a wrong information and they tried to build a narrative against the institutions. In reality, the door was opened from inside to orchestrate a drama, he added.

He said a private cameraman hired by Maryam Safdar was making all the videos at the time of arrest of Safdar Awan in the hotel corridor and reception. The footage was issued from the channels of their choice.

Maryam was not given admission in the medical colleges and her level of critical thinking was not upto the mark, he alleged.

He recalled that the Sharif brothers threw indecent pictures of Benazir Bhutto from the airplane, adding everybody saw the "hooliganism" of Safdar and others at the mausoleum of Quaid-I-Azam.

"It seemed that with the arrest of Safdar Awan, Bilawal Bhutto took revenge from the Sharif and Co," he remarked.

He said the Indian media used the Karachi incident to unleash propaganda against the institutions and Pakistan army. The enemies of Pakistan were targeting the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Pakistan army.

He said workers of Pakistan Muslim League (N) and others were calling Maryam Safdar Madar-e-Millat whereas the father of Khurram Dastgir had used highly abusive language against the Madar-e-Millat Fatima Jinnah in the 1960s.

The journalists and television channels favouring the opposition were magnifying the lies of Maryam by following a planned script.

She said Maryam and her family were trying to prove that they were innocent and attempting to save the wealth accumulated through corruption.

Gill said that Nawaz Sharif should come back from London and undergo sentence given by the courts.

"Nawaz Sharif was lying and he was not a revolutionary as claimed by his supporters. He never had a smooth relationship with the army chiefs and chief justices. He always wanted complete autonomy to commit corruption but he will not be allowed to do so," he added.

He declared that Prime Minister Imran Khan will bring back Nawaz Sharif from London no matter what it takes as he should be punished for "looting" the national wealth.

To a question about the disappearance of a journalist Ali Imran in Karachi, he said the government of Prime Minister believed in freedom of expression.

He said the Interior Ministry and the Information Minister had stated that the Sindh police should recover Ali Imran as soon as possible.

Sindh government should hold an inquiry into the incident of disappearance of the journalist, he added.

He said justice was not done in the case of the Model Town incident in which even a pregnant woman was shot dead, adding the well known character Gullu Butt had said that Nawaz Sharif was not a revolutionary and he (Gullu) sided with the national institutions of the country.

Gill assured that the government would bring down prices of essential items, control inflation and would move the economy in the right direction and solve problems of people.
