As per the Islamabad High Court's (IHC) orders, the summons for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia and Avenfield references have been posted in newspapers on Monday.

The notice posted on Dawn and Jang were issued by the additional registrar of the IHC. The federal government will bear the expense of the summons, the IHC had said.

The notice said that Sharif is absconding and is intentionally concealing himself to avoid the service of the warrants issued to him by the court. The notice further said that Sharif has been given till November 24 to appear in court.

In September, the high court had issued non-bailable arrest warrants for the former PM. The IHC had also dismissed his application seeking exemption from personal appearance in the hearing of appeals against his conviction in the Al-Azizia and Avenfield reference.

Last year in October, the IHC had granted Sharif bail on humanitarian grounds after which the government allowed him to leave the country in November to get medical treatment in London. The former PM has yet to return despite several summons and deadlines.

In 2019, an accountability court convicted Sharif in the Al-Azizia case and awarded him seven years in jail. It also fined him Rs1.5 billion and US $25 million in the Al-Azizia reference.

Similarly, in 2018, he was awarded 10 years as jail time in the Avenfied reference. However, the IHC had suspended the prison sentence in 2019.
