Three American scientists win Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovery of Hepatitis C virus

(Karachi) Three American scientists have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology for the discovery of the Hepatitis C virus, media reported on Monday.

Nobel Peace Committee Head Thomas Perlmann announced the winners in Stockholm.

As per details, Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice made seminal discoveries that led to the identification of Hepatitis C virus. The three scientists made a decisive contribution to the fight against blood-borne hepatitis, a major global health problem that causes cirrhosis and liver cancer in people around the world.

The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and prize money of 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1,118,000).

The medicine prize carried particular significance this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has highlighted the importance that medical research has for societies and economies around the world.

According to World Health Organization estimates, there are over 70 million cases of hepatitis worldwide and 400,000 deaths each year.
