Two million deaths possible from COVID-19 even with a vaccine, warns WHO
- COVID-19 cases are rising again in many parts of the world
According to an AFP toll, one million people have died of COVID-19 globally.
The threat of the virus’s spread has not subsided yet as several reports warn of a second wave while infections are on the rise in many regions across the world.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the global death toll from COVID-19 could reach two million before an effective vaccine is widely used.
In the US alone, more than 200000 people have died from the coronavirus while more than 7 million are infected, said a John Hopkins University report.
In Europe, COVID-19 cases are on the rise again. In many countries, cases have jumped back to numbers recorded in mid-March peak of virus spread.
So far, there is no confirmation on when the COVID-19 vaccine is going to be available. Globally, more than 170 teams of researchers are rushing to develop a vaccine.
However, it is expected that China may be able to develop the vaccine later this year. “Coronavirus vaccines being developed in China may be ready for use by the general public as early as November,” said an official with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
