Pakistan has pledged its support to its brotherly nation Azerbaijan and its position on Nagorno-Karabakh.

"The intensive shelling by Armenian forces over the weekend on civilian populations of Azerbaijani villages of Terter, Aghdam, Fizuli, and Jabrayil region is reprehensible and most unfortunate," a statement by the Foreign Office (FO) said.

Expressing its concerns, Pakistan said asked Armenia must stop its military action which could compromise the peace and security of the entire region.

"We support Azerbaijan’s position on Nagorno-Karabakh, which is in line with the several unanimously adopted UNSecurity Council resolutions," FO statement added.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also pledged support for Azerbaijan. Azerbaijanis are predominantly Turkic people with whom Turkey has close ties.

On Sunday, clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan killed at least 23 people as they battled over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but is controlled by ethnic Armenians.

Following clashes, martial law was declared in some parts of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.
