Farmers play vital role in country's growth: Elahi

LAHORE: Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhary Parvez Elahi has said that farmers play a vital role in the country's growth and thus facilitating them will benefit the national economy. He expressed these views while addressing a meeting of Punjab Assembly's Special Committee on Agriculture here on Friday. It was attended by the provincial legislators belonging to all parties, Punjab Agriculture Secretary Dr Wasif Khurshid and senior officials.

The Speaker recalled that during his tenure as the Punjab Chief Minister, farmers with less than twelve and a half acres of land, comprising 88 percent of the farmers in Punjab, were exempted from paying tax while they were charged water cess at a fixed flat rate.
