LG elections in Sindh to be held after delimitation of constituencies, says CM Murad

(Karachi) Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has said that local government elections in the province will be held after delimitation of constituencies.

Addressing media in Sehwan on Sunday, Murad said that the exercise of delimitation of constituencies for local bodies polls will be held after population census. "The process of delimitation under the law, could be initiated after approval of the census results by the Council of Common Interest (CCI)," he maintained.

He pointed out that the local council elections could not be held under the population census of 1998 and there is need to hold a new census. “Local bodies elections will be held after 120 days of delimitation of the constituencies,” he mentioned.

Earlier, the operation of all local councils, offices of the mayors, deputy mayors and all elected and nominated representatives of Local Government ceased functioning after expiry of the four-year term.

As per law, the Sindh government is bound to hold LG elections in three months. No preparations, however, have been made for the polls so far.

Four years ago, the LG elections were held on the directives of the Supreme Court. Earlier, the city's affairs were run by the administrator as no elections were held after 2009.
