KARACHI: As many as 12 wind power projects with a cumulative capacity of 650 megawatts (MW) of electricity in Sindh are likely to commence commercial operations by end of December 2020, said the provincial energy minister here on Friday.
Imtiaz Ahmad Shaikh said these projects - each with a producing capacity of 50 MW power are under construction in wind corridor of Jhimpir and Jamshoro - identified as the most lucrative sites for the wind power plants in the country.
Around 650 MW of cheaper and environment friendly power would be injected to the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) system, by the end of this year, he said.
Sindh province has already obtained formal licence from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to setup its own "Provincial Grid Company" (PGC) in November 2019, however, officials in Sindh Energy department said work on the grid is going on.
They said Sindh has incorporated Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company Limited (ST&DCPL) with a mandate to construct, own, operate & maintain transmission lines on commercial basis.
Only the wind corridor of Jhimpir has a potential of about 50,000 MW but is only contributing more or less 1,185 MW to the National Grid due to transmission line constraints.
