Australian shares are poised to open lower on Monday after the country recorded 17 new coronavirus deaths on Sunday as it grapples with a second wave of the pandemic.

The benchmark slipped 0.1% on Friday. New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index edged 0.2% higher in early trade.
