ISLAMABAD: The government is likely to confer civil award on Zargham Eshaq Khan, a former Joint Secretary of Power Division, for his contribution in "successful" arbitration with Turkish firm, M/s Karkey Karendiz due to which $ 1.2 billion penalty was waived off. A Core Committee comprising Zargham senior officers from ISI and Attorney General's Office played key role in finding out wrongdoings of Turkish company in different European companies.
Former Secretary Power, Irfran Ali, in a letter to Prime Minister, sought extension in deputation of Zargham which was rejected. He had stated that there are crucial time where the government was talking about long reaching reform initiatives under the directions of the Prime Minister, Zargham Eshaq Khan is an asset not only to the power sector but to Government of Pakistan with his deep institutional memory, analytical capabilities, integrity and courage to stand up for the country's good which he has shown in the Turkish firm M/s Karkey Karendiz case, where he played a pivotal role and the negotiation with IMF.
The Prime Minister, however, had turned down the request of former Secretary Power Division and repatriated him to Nespak. The cash reward for civil award is Rs 10 million but the Power Division has agreed on a reduced amount of Rs 2 million to be paid from the regulators budget of Nespak subject to approval of Nespak Board.
